17 May 2021 – Logan Echolls, Michael Vaughn, Mark Sloan, Patrick Verona, Westley, Noah Calhoun, Charlie St. Cloud, Jethro Leroy Gibbs, Jess Mariano, Billy Wyatt, Seeley Booth, Aragorn, Pacey Witter. What do these men have in common? I’ve loved all of them for a time, and they are all fictional men. None of these men was perfect. As a matter of fact, some of them I actually didn’t like at times. But each of them had one or many qualities that made them attractive and even lovable. I don’t really care that they are fictional men.
Heath Ledger played Patrick Verona in “10 Things I Hate About You,” a movie based on Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.” He was the bad boy who is hired to pretend to date a girl and actually falls in love with her. He is very sarcastic and no-nonsense, and he’s the only guy who likes the smart, snarky and rebellious girl, Kat, who comes across as a snobby know-it-all but actually has a kind, more vulnerable side that she tries not to show. As much as I identify with Kat, it was easy for me to fall for the guy who not only sees her but likes her despite her roughness. He also said something that I wish I could internalize, “Don’t let anyone ever make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want. Go for it.”
Billy Wyatt, played by Mark Harmon in “Stealing Home,” is a washed-up baseball player who has to go back to his hometown to do something with his childhood love’s ashes. In flashbacks, we learn about both the crush, Katie, and Billy. Watching the movie, we experience the art of growing up and trying to find ourselves. After Billy’s dad is killed, Katie gives him the best summer ever. When Billy receives Katie’s ashes, he must determine what to do with them. This journey teaches him about all of the possibilities his life still has to offer. At the end of the movie, Billy says, “If everybody needs somebody to remind them who they are, Katie Chandler was that for me.” It always makes me consider what the purpose is of specific people in my life. Billy Wyatt was one of the first fictional men I fell in love with.
Ryan Gosling played Noah Calhoun in “The Notebook.” He is a naturally quiet guy who is passionate and brooding. Allie brings him out of his shell, and he becomes devoted to making her happy. Their love is hard because her parents disapprove. It’s the old story, she’s from a family with status, and he’s just a poor townie. Noah refuses to give up because his life is not complete without her in his life. He fights with all his passion to rekindling their love. A man who loves with everything he has – who can’t love a guy like that? Noah also knew how a relationship should work. He told Allie, “So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard. We’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever. You and me, every day.”
Westley, aka the Dread Pirate Roberts, is the farm boy turned pirate who falls for the farm owner’s daughter, Buttercup, in “The Princess Bride.” He wants her to see him how he is inside, so he spends years becoming everything he ever dreamed of so that he could go back and earn her love. When she is captured and forced into marriage with Prince Humperdink, Westley does everything in his power, with the help of his friends, to free her. He continues to love her despite her sass and less than kind behavior. A girl can’t ask for much more. Westley’s famous quote is also awe-inspiring, “As you wish.” If I can do everything with that in my heart, I win.
When Mark Sloan joins “Grey’s Anatomy,” he is a complete scoundrel. I hated everything about him. He was a womanizer who cared only about conquests no matter who it hurt, even his friends. Eventually, he matures. Unfortunately, it was too late for him, but he had time to share this amazing quote, “I want you to promise me something. If you love someone, you tell them even if you’re scared that it’s not the right thing. Even if you’re scared, it will cause problems. Even if you’re scared, it will burn your life to the ground. You say it. You say it loud. And you go from there.” I learned from this, and it made me love him.
Jethro Leroy Gibbs is the kindest, sweetest, most loyal soul – if you don’t get on his bad side, that is. Gibbs is one of the most complicated characters ever created for television. He’s seen it all and done it all, and it has scarred him. Fortunately, he loves everything he is. We would all benefit from a stint working, living and being a friend of Gibbs. If you’ve ever watched NCIS, you are probably aware of Gibbs’ rules. He and his team often quote his rules. Many of these rules apply to the job, but most of them are also applicable to the real world. My favorite rules:
– Rule 8: Never take anything for granted.
– Rule 28: When you need help, ask.
– Rule 39: There is no such thing as a coincidence.
– Rule 51: Sometimes you’re wrong.
Aragorn from “The Lord of the Rings” made me love the story. He may not be billed as the hero of the story, but this stoic character is a brave, amazing warrior, full of compassion and wisdom. Aragorn is a natural leader and hero who is dedicated to fighting for what is right. He is brave, selfless and honorable, yet humble and kind. He is the perfect example of the quintessential hero throughout both literature and film. Before the Battle of Helm’s Creek, a young man is scared because everyone has told him that there’s no hope of winning. Aragorn encourages him by saying, “There is always hope.” Great advice for all of life.
Logan Echolls was a spoiled rich boy who acted like the worst kind of guy. He literally had all of the worst qualities; he was a complete “douche bag.” His life imploded, and the unthinkable happened; he got worse. Through it all, he was in love with Veronica Mars, but he treated her badly too. Logan and Veronica have some of the most snarky and fun banter in any television show. He is fun and engaging, and very deep. You can’t help but love him. Something happens that forced him to be a better man. Logan is proof that people can change, and we can’t be judged by what we did or who we were. Instead, we should be measured by who we are today. It is hard to narrow down the Logan Echolls’ quotes to my favorite, but I really loved, “What I’m trying to say is that I’m in love with you,” and “I thought our story was epic, you know, you and me. Spanning years and continents. Lives ruined bloodshed. Epic.” Deep, passionate love is what Logan had to offer. Truly one of my favorite fictional men.
Each of these fictional men has taught me many things about men and myself. But most of all, they provided entertainment and inspiration. If you haven’t seen these television shows or movies, check them out.
