Why “Write Pray Ninja”

Everyone knows the book by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love, made into a movie starring Julia Roberts. Gilbert’s book has been an inspiration to many women and men since it was published. When I decided to set out on my own journey, my mind immediately conjured her book title. My journey title was formed. Here’s how the title came about and why I think it defines where I am in life and where I am going.

WRITE – I have always loved to write. Throughout my school years, I was the one who loved the writing assignments, the poems, the essays, and especially the research papers. I journal like crazy. And, like many people, I have always wanted to write a novel. I have a very logical mind, my favorite college course was Turing’s Logic, but I love expressing myself through writing. This journey will be full of all of that as I record my adventures, study my inner self, pray for those I love and share my discoveries. This is why WRITE.

PRAY – Spirituality has always been a part of me. If someone were to ask when I became a Christian or when I came to know Christ, the answer would be before I can remember. As far as I can tell, I have always been a Christian. About ten years ago, I even started seminary. I quickly learned that this wasn’t what I needed. More time with God was what I needed, and prayer was how to do it. Well, I wasn’t good at it. I didn’t do it very well or often. When I did pray, I was disappointed. My relationship with prayer is complicated, as you will learn if you stick around. Prayer keeps me grounded, keeps me focused on what’s important, and often puts me at peace. I need to be intentional about it and listen for God’s voice. This is why PRAY.

NINJA – One day, I was having a conversation with some coworkers. One of them said that his eight-year-old daughter told him that she wants to be a ninja. I immediately said, “I love that! That’s amazing. I want to be a ninja, too.” I am pretty sure his daughter meant a real ninja, but my ninja is something different. When I think of a ninja, I see mental strength, knowing your limits, and the art of survival. A ninja is powerful because a ninja knows herself, finds strength in herself and survives despite everything put in her way. This is why NINJA.

(Note: The original title was “Hike Pray Ninja,” but after realizing that although I love hiking and I would be doing much of it, there was more to it.)
